Ask what makes a lawn look like the ones in our photos and people guess fertilizer, water, or seed. Those matter — but the single biggest difference between a thick lawn and a thin one is usually how short it's being cut.

Grass feeds itself through its blades. Scalp it low and you remove most of the plant's ability to make food, stress the roots, and open the canopy so sunlight reaches the soil — which is exactly what crabgrass and weed seeds are waiting for. Around Richmond, cool-season fescue lawns do best mowed tall, roughly three and a half to four inches, especially through summer heat.

Cutting frequency matters as much as height. Taking off more than a third of the blade in one pass shocks the plant, which is why a lawn mowed properly every week looks better than one mowed short every three — even though the short one was 'cut more.'

The stripes, for what it's worth, are just light bending off blades laid in opposite directions — but they only show on turf that's tall, dense and healthy. Stripes are the receipt, not the trick.
