Mulch Does a Lot More Than Look Good

A fresh bed of mulch changes how a whole property reads from the street in a single afternoon. But if looks were all it did, it wouldn't be worth doing every year — and it is.

Mulch holds moisture in the soil through Virginia summers, buffers root temperature in both directions, and starves weed seeds of the light they need to germinate. Two to three inches is the working depth: less does little, and more suffocates roots and invites fungus.

The most common mistake we fix is the volcano — mulch piled against tree trunks and shrub stems. It traps moisture against bark, rots it, and invites insects. Mulch should pull back from every trunk like a donut, not lean on it like a cone.

Timing-wise, spring mulching after beds are cleaned and edged is the standard play; a lighter fall refresh keeps color through winter. Edging is what makes it last — a clean cut edge keeps the lawn out and the mulch in, so the bed still has its lines in August.
