Mulch needs refreshing every year. Stone doesn't. That's the whole trade in one line — a decorative stone bed costs more to install and then mostly just sits there looking sharp, which is why it keeps showing up along foundations, side yards and drainage lines.
Stone earns its keep in places organic mulch struggles: against the house where you want nothing holding moisture on the siding, around downspouts and drainage paths where mulch washes out, and in tight side yards nobody wants to re-mulch annually.
What makes it last is what's under and around it. A proper base fabric keeps soil from swallowing the stone; a solid edge — cobblestone, paver or steel — keeps the bed's lines crisp instead of bleeding into the lawn. Skip either and a five-year bed becomes a two-year one.
It isn't for everywhere. Plants that like cool, rich soil prefer organic mulch, and stone reflects heat onto whatever grows in it — so the right property usually ends up with both, each where it belongs.
